Great news for gelato lovers (and those just craving a cold treat on a hot day) – the quest for the ultimate gelato experience is over. We have a winner, everyone! Please join me in congratulating Mo Gelato, at 178 Mulberry St in lower Manhattan, for blowing my taste buds away in a gastronomically joyous moment. Their gelato is, hands down, the best thing I have ever tasted!

With another location in Bologna, Italy, Mo Gelato, in Little Italy, is certainly at the top of its game. When I came in for a sampling, I was welcomed by Massimo Galeano, the shop’s Italian owner, and his lovely Italian wife. Both were extremely happy to share recipes and stories about this one-of-a-kind gelato. Mr. Galeano has been making gelato for over 20 years and uses both direct-from-Italy and locally sourced ingredients in his gelato: pistachios and hazelnuts from Italy, local milk from Battenkill Valley Farms in Salem, NY, and locally grown, organic produce. Nothing is artificial because Galeano believes you can taste the difference; my tasting proved him right. Each flavor comes from a unique recipe and is made in small batches every day in the kitchen in the back of the shop.

After sampling almost every incredible flavor offered, I whittled my favorites down to three: Pistachio, Caramel with salty peanut, and Yogurt. When you visit Mo Gelato, please do yourself a favor and try the pistachio. It will blow you away. You can taste the freshness immediately. Unlike most brightly colored, overly sweet, pistachio ice creams, this gelato is a mild, light green color so you can tell nothing is artificial – it’s light and fresh. Mo Gelato’s Yogurt flavor was most refreshing, containing a hint of sweetness and tartness – a brilliant palate cleanser. The Caramel with salty peanut was the perfect combination of sweet and salty – another light, but packed with flavor gelato that would compliment any meal.

Mo Gelato stands on one of the iconic Little Italy streets, making it a perfect post dinner destination for some of the best gelato in New York.
